Keep Your Smile Healthy with Regular Exams and Cleanings

At Essex Dental Arts, we believe prevention is the foundation of great oral health. Regular dental exams and professional cleanings help us catch small problems before they become big ones—saving you time, discomfort, and expense down the road.

Our team makes every visit as comfortable as possible. We take time to explain what we're doing and answer your questions, so you always feel informed and at ease.

What Happens During Your Dental Exam

A comprehensive dental exam will be performed by your dentist at your initial visit. At regular check-up exams, your dentist and hygienist will perform the following:

  • Examination of diagnostic X-rays: Essential for detecting decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss. X-rays also help us see tooth and root positions that aren't visible during a visual exam.

  • Oral cancer screening: We check your face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer. Early detection saves lives.

  • Gum disease evaluation: We check the gums and bone around your teeth for any signs of periodontal disease, which affects nearly half of adults over 30.

  • Examination of tooth decay: All tooth surfaces are checked for decay using special dental instruments that can detect problems in their earliest stages.

  • Examination of existing restorations: We check current fillings, crowns, and other dental work to make sure everything is holding up well.

Professional Dental Cleaning

Professional dental cleanings (dental prophylaxis) are usually performed by our Registered Dental Hygienists. Your cleaning appointment includes a dental exam and the following:

Removal of calculus (tartar): Calculus is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments—your toothbrush at home can't get rid of it.

Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria produce toxins that inflame the gums. This inflammation is the start of periodontal disease.

Teeth polishing: We remove stain and plaque that is not otherwise removed during tooth brushing and scaling, leaving your teeth smooth and clean.

How Often Should You Come In?

Most patients benefit from exams and cleanings every six months. Some patients with gum disease or other concerns may need to visit more often. We'll work with you to create a schedule that keeps your smile at its best.

Common questions
Will my cleaning hurt?+

Most patients find cleanings comfortable. If you have sensitive areas or gum inflammation, let us know—we can adjust our technique and take breaks as needed to keep you comfortable.

Do I really need X-rays every time?+

No. We typically take X-rays once a year or as needed based on your oral health. X-rays help us see decay, bone loss, and other issues that aren't visible during a visual exam.

How long does an exam and cleaning take?+

Plan on about 45 minutes to an hour for a routine visit. Your first comprehensive exam may take a bit longer so we can get to know you and your smile.
