Dental X-Rays

Essential diagnostic imaging that reveals hidden dental problems not visible during regular exams, helping us detect issues early and create accurate treatment plans.

Why Dental X-Rays Matter

Dental radiographs, commonly called X-rays, are essential preventive and diagnostic tools that provide valuable information not visible during a regular dental exam. We use this information to safely and accurately detect hidden dental abnormalities and complete an accurate treatment plan. Without X-rays, problem areas may go undetected.

Early detection and treatment of dental problems can save you time, money, unnecessary discomfort, and your teeth.

What Dental X-Rays Can Reveal

Dental X-rays may show:

  • Abscesses or cysts
  • Bone loss
  • Cancerous and non-cancerous tumors
  • Decay between the teeth
  • Developmental abnormalities
  • Poor tooth and root positions
  • Problems inside a tooth or below the gum line

Are Dental X-Rays Safe?

We understand that some patients have concerns about radiation exposure. The good news is that dental X-rays are very safe.

We are all exposed to natural radiation in our environment every day. The amount of radiation exposure from a full mouth series of X-rays is equal to the amount a person receives in a single day from natural sources.

Dental X-rays produce a low level of radiation and are considered safe. We take necessary precautions to limit your exposure to radiation when taking dental X-rays, including using lead apron shields to protect your body and using modern, fast film that cuts down the exposure time of each X-ray.

How Often Should You Have Dental X-Rays?

The need for dental X-rays depends on each patient's individual dental health needs. We will recommend necessary X-rays based on the review of your medical and dental history, dental exam, signs and symptoms, age consideration, and risk for disease.

For new patients, a full mouth series of dental X-rays is recommended. A full series is usually good for three to five years.

At regular check-ups, bite-wing X-rays (X-rays of top and bottom teeth biting together) are recommended once or twice a year to detect new dental problems as they develop.

Common questions
How much radiation am I exposed to during dental X-rays?+

Very little. A full mouth series of dental X-rays exposes you to the same amount of radiation you receive in a single day from natural sources in the environment. We also use lead apron shields and modern fast film to minimize exposure even further.

How often will I need dental X-rays?+

It depends on your individual dental health. New patients typically need a full mouth series, which lasts three to five years. At regular check-ups, we usually recommend bite-wing X-rays once or twice a year to catch new problems early. We base our recommendations on your medical and dental history, exam findings, age, and risk for disease.

Why do I need X-rays if my teeth feel fine?+

Many dental problems develop without causing pain or visible symptoms until they become serious. X-rays allow us to see between teeth, below the gum line, and inside teeth to detect issues like hidden decay, infections, bone loss, and tumors early when treatment is simpler and more effective.
