Dentures & Partial Dentures

Removable dental appliances that replace missing teeth and restore your smile. Complete dentures replace all teeth in an arch, while partial dentures fill gaps when some natural teeth remain.

Natural-Looking Tooth Replacement

A denture is a removable dental appliance that replaces missing teeth and the surrounding tissue. At Essex Dental Arts, we create dentures that closely resemble your natural teeth and may even enhance your smile.

Complete vs. Partial Dentures

Complete dentures are used when all of the teeth in an arch are missing. We offer two types:

  • Conventional dentures are made after your teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has fully healed, usually 4 to 6 weeks. During this healing time, you will be without teeth.
  • Immediate dentures are made in advance and placed immediately after your teeth are removed, so you never have to go without teeth. Once your tissues shrink and heal, we'll make adjustments to ensure a proper fit.

Partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. A partial denture not only fills in the spaces created by missing teeth, it also prevents your other teeth from shifting out of position.

The Denture Process

Getting dentures requires several appointments, usually over a period of several weeks. We take highly accurate impressions (molds) and measurements to create your custom denture. Several "try-in" appointments may be necessary to ensure we achieve the proper shape, color, and fit.

At your final appointment, we will precisely adjust and place the completed denture, ensuring a natural and comfortable fit.

What to Expect

It's normal to experience increased saliva flow, some soreness, and possible speech and chewing difficulty at first. These symptoms will subside as your muscles and tissues get used to the new dentures.

We'll provide you with detailed care instructions for your new dentures. Proper cleaning of your dental appliance, good oral hygiene, and regular dental visits will help your dentures last for many years. While dentures are very durable, they may eventually need to be remade, repaired, or readjusted due to normal wear.
