Fixed Bridges

A fixed bridge is a permanent, non-removable appliance that replaces one or more missing teeth, restoring your smile, chewing ability, and preventing remaining teeth from shifting.

What Is a Fixed Bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed, non-removable appliance that offers an excellent solution for replacing missing teeth. Unlike removable dentures, a bridge stays securely in place and feels more like your natural teeth.

There are several types of bridges available. During your consultation, we'll discuss the best option for your particular case. The most popular type is the traditional bridge, typically made of porcelain fused to metal for strength and a natural appearance. This bridge consists of two crowns that fit over the anchoring teeth on either side of the gap (called abutment teeth) and are attached to pontics (artificial teeth) that fill the space left by your missing teeth.

Dental bridges are highly durable and will last many years with proper care. However, they may eventually need replacement or re-cementing due to normal wear.

The Bridge Procedure

Getting a bridge usually requires two or more visits to our Verona office.

First Visit: While your teeth are comfortably numb, we prepare the two anchoring teeth by removing a portion of enamel to allow room for the crowns. Next, we take a highly accurate impression (mold) that will be sent to a dental laboratory where your custom bridge will be fabricated. We'll also place a temporary bridge for you to wear for several weeks until your next appointment.

Second Visit: Your permanent bridge will be carefully checked and adjusted to achieve a proper fit, then cemented into place. Occasionally, we may temporarily cement the bridge first, allowing your teeth and tissue time to adjust to the new restoration. If this is the case, we'll permanently cement the bridge at a later appointment.

Caring for Your Bridge

At the conclusion of your procedure, we'll provide detailed care instructions. Proper brushing, flossing (including under the bridge with special floss threaders or interdental brushes), and regular dental visits will help your new permanent bridge last for many years.

Common questions
How long does a fixed bridge last?+

Dental bridges are highly durable and can last many years, often 10 to 15 years or longer with proper care. They may eventually need replacement or re-cementing due to normal wear, but regular dental visits and good oral hygiene will help maximize their lifespan.

Will a bridge feel like my natural teeth?+

Yes. Because a bridge is fixed in place and custom-made to fit your mouth, it feels much more natural than a removable appliance. Most patients adjust quickly and find that their bridge restores normal chewing and speaking ability.

How do I clean a fixed bridge?+

You'll brush your bridge just like your natural teeth. Flossing requires special technique—we'll show you how to use floss threaders or interdental brushes to clean under the bridge and around the anchoring teeth. Proper daily cleaning is essential to the longevity of your bridge.
