What Is a Porcelain Crown?

A crown, sometimes called a cap, is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface, restoring it to its original shape and size. Crowns protect and strengthen tooth structure that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations.

Although there are several types of crowns available, porcelain (tooth-colored) crowns are the most popular because they resemble your natural teeth. They are highly durable and will last many years, but like most dental restorations, they may eventually need to be replaced. Porcelain crowns are made to match the shape, size, and color of your teeth, giving you a natural, long-lasting, beautiful smile.

When Do You Need a Crown?

We recommend crowns for a variety of situations:

  • Broken or fractured teeth – A crown restores the tooth's integrity and prevents further damage.
  • Decayed teeth – When decay is too extensive for a filling, a crown can save the tooth.
  • Fractured fillings – Replace old, failing fillings with a strong, permanent solution.
  • Large fillings – Teeth with large fillings are at risk of breaking; a crown provides reinforcement.
  • After a root canal – Root canal-treated teeth become brittle and need a crown for protection.
  • Cosmetic enhancement – Improve the appearance of misshapen or discolored teeth.

The Crown Process

Getting a crown usually requires two appointments at our Verona office.

First Appointment

We begin by taking several highly accurate molds (or impressions) that will be used to create your custom crown. A mold will also be used to create a temporary crown, which will stay on your tooth for approximately two weeks until your new crown is fabricated by a dental laboratory.

While the tooth is numb, we will prepare it by removing any decay and shaping the surface to properly fit the crown. Once these details are complete, your temporary crown will be placed with temporary cement, and we will check your bite to ensure you are biting properly.

Second Appointment

At your second appointment, your temporary crown will be removed and the tooth will be cleaned. Your new crown will be carefully placed to ensure the spacing and bite are accurate. We will give you care instructions and encourage you to have regular dental visits to check your new crown.

Caring for Your Crown

With proper care and regular dental visits, your porcelain crown can last many years. Brush and floss as you normally would, and avoid chewing on hard objects like ice or hard candy. If you grind your teeth at night, we may recommend a nightguard to protect your crown and natural teeth.

How it works
01

Consultation and Preparation

We examine your tooth, take precise impressions, and prepare the tooth while you're comfortably numb. A temporary crown is placed to protect your tooth.

02

Custom Fabrication

Your impressions are sent to a trusted dental laboratory where skilled technicians craft your custom porcelain crown to match your natural teeth.

03

Final Placement

About two weeks later, we remove the temporary crown, clean the tooth, and carefully place your permanent crown, checking fit and bite for lasting comfort.

Common questions
Does getting a crown hurt?+

No. We numb the area completely before preparing your tooth, so you should feel no pain during the procedure. Some patients experience mild sensitivity after the anesthesia wears off, but this typically resolves quickly.

How long do porcelain crowns last?+

With proper care and regular dental checkups, porcelain crowns can last many years. Most crowns last 10 to 15 years or longer, depending on your oral hygiene and habits.

Will my crown look natural?+

Yes. We carefully match the color, shape, and size of your crown to your natural teeth. Most people will not be able to tell the difference between your crown and your other teeth.
