What Is a Porcelain Fixed Bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed, non-removable appliance that offers an excellent way to replace one or more missing teeth. Unlike removable partial dentures, a bridge stays in place permanently, giving you confidence and stability.

The most popular type is the traditional bridge, typically made of porcelain fused to metal. Porcelain bridges are favored because they closely resemble your natural teeth in color and translucency. The bridge consists of two crowns that fit over the anchoring teeth on either side of the gap (called abutment teeth), with one or more artificial teeth (pontics) attached in between to fill the space.

Dental bridges are highly durable and will last many years with proper care. Over time, they may need replacement or re-cementing due to normal wear, but with good oral hygiene and regular dental visits, your bridge can serve you well for a long time.

Why Choose a Fixed Bridge?

Replacing missing teeth is about more than just appearance. When you lose a tooth, the surrounding teeth can begin to drift or tilt into the empty space, affecting your bite and potentially leading to jaw problems. A fixed bridge prevents these issues while restoring full function and aesthetics.

We'll discuss the best options for your particular case during your consultation, taking into account the location of the missing teeth, the health of the surrounding teeth, and your personal preferences.

What to Expect During Treatment

Getting a bridge typically requires two or more visits to our Verona office.

First Visit: While your teeth are comfortably numb, we prepare the two anchoring teeth by removing a small portion of enamel to make room for the crowns. We then take a highly accurate impression (mold) of the area, which is sent to a dental laboratory where your custom bridge will be crafted. You'll wear a temporary bridge for several weeks to protect the prepared teeth and maintain function and appearance.

Second Visit: Your permanent bridge will be carefully checked and adjusted to ensure a proper, comfortable fit. We'll then cement it into place. Occasionally, we may temporarily cement the bridge first, allowing your teeth and gums time to adjust to the new restoration before final, permanent cementation at a later appointment.

Caring for Your Bridge

At the conclusion of your treatment, we'll provide detailed care instructions. Proper brushing and flossing—including special attention to cleaning under the bridge—along with regular dental checkups will help ensure the longevity of your new permanent bridge.

If you have questions about whether a porcelain fixed bridge is right for you, we're here to help you explore your options and find the best solution for your smile.
